About the Intermediate level
training
* 16+ y.o
* 5+ years of training / Pre Arangetram
The intermediate level provides year-round training for Bharatanatyam dancers with 5+ years of experience, focusing on preparing them for professional dance careers. Kassiyet fosters a learning environment that encourages creativity and individuality while cultivating a deep passion for the art of dance.
Training Commitment and Arangetram Opportunity
Dancers are required to commit to at least one year of training, ensuring a strong foundation and consistent progress in their Bharatanatyam practice. This commitment is essential for developing the necessary technical skill, artistic expression, and stage presence required for advanced performances.
For dedicated dancers, there is the opportunity to complete their Arangetram, the formal debut performance, after learning multiple Margams (comprehensive dance sequences). This milestone marks the culmination of years of training and provides dancers with the chance to showcase their proficiency and artistry in front of a live audience. Throughout this journey, students will be supported with personalized guidance and preparation, ensuring they are well-equipped for this significant achievement in their dance careers.
Class details
Warm-Up, Strength, and Mobility Training for Dancers
The classes place a strong emphasis on a structured warm-up, mobility, and strength-training routine to prepare the body for dance practice. Warm-up sessions include targeted exercises designed to activate and strengthen key muscle groups, ensuring the dancer's body is primed for optimal performance.
These sessions also focus on enhancing joint mobility, improving flexibility, and reducing the risk of injury. By incorporating strength-building techniques and mobility drills, dancers develop greater control, stability, and endurance, creating a strong foundation for executing Bharatanatyam movements with precision and grace.
Adavu Practice and Creative Exploration
Adavu practice is a fundamental component of every class, focusing on building stamina, precision, and clarity of movement. Students work through all the foundational adavus to refine their technique while strengthening their rhythm and coordination.
To further enhance artistic development, the practice includes crafting engaging adavu combinations that encourage creativity and a deeper understanding of movement aesthetics. This approach not only hones technical skills but also fosters a dynamic connection to the artistry and expression within Bharatanatyam
Learning Signature Compositions
Students will have the opportunity to learn some of the most intricate and beautifully choreographed Bharatanatyam compositions. These pieces include masterpieces created by Kassiyet’s esteemed Gurus, as well as selections from Kassiyet’s personal repertoire, reflecting her unique artistic vision and interpretation of the dance form.
Each composition is paired with original music, specifically composed and choreographed to align with the nuances of Kassiyet’s repertoire. This ensures an authentic and cohesive artistic experience. Please note that all music and choreography provided are copyrighted and exclusively part of Kassiyet’s curated collection, offering dancers access to unique and professionally crafted works.
Theory and Dance Conversations
In addition to practical training, the classes include theory sessions that delve into the rich history, philosophy, and cultural context of Bharatanatyam. These discussions offer students a deeper understanding of the dance form, its origins, and its evolution over time.
Furthermore, classes engage in insightful conversations about the current state of Bharatanatyam and Indian Classical Arts on the global stage. These discussions explore trends, challenges, and opportunities within the international dance community, encouraging students to think critically about their role in the broader artistic landscape. By integrating theory and contemporary dialogue, students gain a well-rounded perspective on the art form, fostering both technical excellence and cultural awareness.
Additional Opportunities
Weekend Residencies and Intensives
In addition to regular classes, the program may include occasional weekend dance residencies and intensives, designed to foster a sense of community and provide opportunities for immersive learning outside the usual class structure. These residencies offer students the chance to deepen their practice, collaborate with fellow dancers, and engage in focused workshops that enhance their technical and artistic growth.
Details about any upcoming intensives will be shared in advance, ensuring that students have ample time to prepare and participate. These events are designed to enrich the overall learning experience and create a supportive environment for dancers to connect, learn, and grow together.
Learning from the Masters
Kassiyet encourages a holistic approach to dance by fostering learning in various interconnected aspects of Indian classical arts. In addition to Bharatanatyam, students have the opportunity to explore Carnatic music, Talam (rhythm), choreography, and other artistic dimensions of dance. These disciplines are integral to the art form, enhancing both technical skill and artistic expression.
Kassiyet collaborates with some of the most esteemed masters in the realm of Indian arts, offering students the chance to learn directly from these renowned experts. This exposure to various artistic traditions deepens students' understanding of Bharatanatyam and enriches their creative development, helping them become more versatile and well-rounded artists.
Encouraging Exposure to Live Performances
Dancers are strongly encouraged to attend Indian classical dance performances, as well as other dance events happening in the city. Watching live performances offers invaluable insight into the nuances of movement, expression, and stage presence, which are essential components of dance training.
Experiencing performances by renowned artists not only broadens artistic knowledge but also inspires dancers by showcasing diverse interpretations of the dance form. This exposure helps students deepen their understanding of Bharatanatyam’s cultural and artistic contexts, while also fostering an appreciation for the richness and variety of dance in the global arts landscape. Observing and engaging with performances is a powerful way to learn and grow as an artist.
